Refined scrap sorting for high-quality alloy

In order to be able to use recycled aluminum also for the production of power cables, Nexans has refined the sorting of aluminum scrap and Trimet has developed a high-quality alloy from the scrap thus available.

Until now, power cables have been manufactured exclusively on the basis of primary aluminum. Trimet, Essen, Germany, and Nexans, Paris, France, have therefore teamed up to develop a product that meets the high technical requirements for the mechanical properties and conductivity of the alloy while reducing the product‘s carbon footprint.

However, recycled aluminum contains impurities that negatively affect the material‘s properties. For this reason, Nexans has refined the sorting of aluminum scrap at its production sites in Europe with the help of RecyCâbles, a joint venture between Nexans and Suez, Paris, France, and has focused its collection on recycling for electrical applications. Trimet has closed the material loop with its recycling concept and developed a high-quality alloy from the scrap thus available, meeting all quality requirements for mechanical and electrical performance.
